My new favourite drink this Fall is a Golden Milk latte. Doesn’t the name even sound amazing?
After 20 years of teaching aerobics, my joints have taken a beating, and I am always looking for ways to keep them healthy. When I heard that this spicy warm drink contains turmeric I knew I had to try it – you know, for my health.
Tumeric is a plant that is often used in Asian cuisine. You can find it fresh or in a dried, powdered form. It’s too bad we don’t cook more often with it in North America, because it contains amazing medicinal properties.
Curcumin is the medicinal agent found in turmeric. Curcumin is an extremely powerful anti-inflammatory. It’s this anti-inflammatory effect that helps the joints, particularly in cases of arthritis. It is also used in Chinese medicine for bowel issues, as inflammation through the gut leads to a host of problems.
People often take turmeric in a capsule form, but I love the taste of this tea and would rather drink my “medicine”. Word of caution – turmeric stains! It is a beautiful bright yellow colour, but unless you want yellow clothes, be careful when using it!
I take the easy way out, and use Botanica Golden milk latte powder because it already contains all the spices I need. I just heat up some almond milk, put the milk and the latte powder in my blender and froth it up. (you don’t need to use a blender but I like the frothy look of it). Sometimes I will use a teaspoon of honey if I’m wanting something sweeter.
If you are feeling adventurous, you can make your own concoction as well!
Ingredients for 2 Servings:
- 2 Cups of milk of choice (I use almond milk) (bone broth works well too!)
- 1 tsp powdered turmeric
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- pinch of black pepper (increases absorption of turmeric)
- 1/4 tsp dried ginger
- pinch of cayenne if you like spice (not for me though!)
- 1 tsp honey
Put all ingredients in a blender, then warm it up in saucepan or microwave.
