I remember the first time I “bonked” on a ride. I was on a group 80 km group ride. I didn’t pack any snacks or energy gels (rookie mistake). We stopped at a coffee shop for the traditional Sunday morning break, but I didn’t like the choices available to me, so didn’t eat.
At the 70 km mark, I had nothing left in me and fell behind. A rider had to circle back for me, give me his energy gel, and let me draft behind him so I could make the last 10 km. How embarrassing! I’m a personal trainer and nutritionist. I should know better!!
After that, I expanded my Holistic Nutrition designation by taking an additional course to specialize in Sports Nutrition.

The first time I met Sandra was at the mountain biking clinic with Caledon Cycling Club. Fast forward a couple years, on an extremely hot day, we found ourselves in the middle of an 81km race with long climbs. “Although I have been riding for many years, I have suspected that my nutrition, most particularly my carb loading before a big ride was not doing the job. When I met Sandra, we had a lengthy discussion regarding my background, eating habits and general diet. Sure enough, my carb loading was off kilter and when I needed that extra burst of energy, it wasn’t there to be had. Sandra coached me through the pre-ride meal plans so that I can maximize my energy level on ride day. Sandra is a great coach and nutritionist as well as very supportive.”
“Having never done long distance rides the idea of doing the Ride to Conquer Cancer was overwhelming for me. When training, I quickly realized just how important nutrition would be to ensure a successful ride. Then I found Sandra’s program. She used our one-on-one meeting to develop a personalized plan that worked for me! It helped me lose weight before the ride and she provided tips and suggestions for what to eat before, during and after rides. Believe me, nutrition is a massive part of a successful ride and with Sandra’s help, I am glad to say I conquered the Ride to Conquer Cancer! Thanks, Sandra.” Brad Holwell, Nova Scotia
